The Sea of Sounds range has been designed for use within Foundation Stage settings. It integrates a colourful ‘underwater’ theme together with fun phonics activities to introduce children to the alphabet sounds a-z.
The Sound Fish
The main element in the Sea of Sounds resources are the 26 Sound Fish, one for each letter of the alphabet. All of the activities, ideas and resources focus around these fish and the fish themselves have been carefully designed to enhance the teaching of phonics, and help children recall alphabet sounds when they encounter them.
The fish all have very distinctive designs to make them memorable for the children. You will also notice how, where possible, the sea creature depicted relates specifically to the sound it represents. The fish that specifically correspond to their alphabet sound are as follows:
b - blue c - crab g - green j - jellyfish n - Nemo o - orange octopus p - pink puffer r - red ray s - starfish y - yellow
The Classroom Display
If you print and laminate the Sound Fish, they can be displayed in the classroom as they are introduced. This is a great way of enhancing the children’s learning because the more regularly they see and use the fish, the more likely they are to remember the sound printed on them.
The creation of a sea display to which the laminated fish can be added as they are taught also makes for an excellent resource that can be used right throughout the school year.
The children love to look out for new fish when they come into school in the morning, or see if they have moved around overnight. If blue tack is used, they can also be taken down regularly from the display and used in activities and then put back up afterwards.
